I am not sure who I should be addressing my correspondence to, but understand that you may be involved in what I am told is called the ‘Referral Refinement’ scheme?

As a result of attending an optician appointment recently, I was told that there was a query regarding the ‘field of vision’ in one of my eyes.  My optician felt that all was OK, but with an element of doubt, he wanted to refer me for a second opinion.  He explained that it might be a referral to the hospital or to another optician for this second opinion, but did mention that a hospital referral might take five to six weeks.

I was surprised therefore, to receive a letter from another optician practice within a few days, asking me to attend their practice for an assessment.  I telephoned as soon as I received this letter and was offered an appointment for the next day (today).

I attended today, where indeed the optician re-checked my eyes and fortunately found that, in his opinion, there was nothing to be concerned about and recommended that a further check up in one year would be a good idea just to compare things again.  So relief all round!

I am so impressed with the care and service I have received, that I asked further questions regarding this Referral Refinement scheme as I had not heard or come across it before and the optician briefly explained how the scheme works.

My husband has recently been sent by his GP to a cardiologist for a second opinion regarding his health.  We have therefore been through the stress of waiting for that hospital appointment letter to arrive, having to travel to Addenbrookes from Bury St Edmunds to attend the appointment, having to pay excess travel insurance as his records showed that there was a question mark against his health and that he was waiting for a hospital appointment when taking a pre-booked holiday; and then having to wait for the results and not being able to arrange any further trips abroad until we knew the outcome.

I appreciate that a cardiologist’s appointment may be very different to an appointment with an ophthalmologist but the stress of wondering whether there is potentially something wrong with my sight, waiting five to six weeks whilst waiting to attend that appointment, not being able to plan any trips away from home in case it clashes with any such appointment etc, equally has a knock on effect to other areas of one’s health, just in the same way my husband’s health situation did.

To have the facility to fast track to a professional to get a second opinion is not only fantastic for patients such as myself, but I assume helps shorten the length of the waiting list time of those who really do need to attend an appointment at the hospital.  A bit like sorting the ‘wheat from the chaff’ to put it crudely, but perhaps appropriately, on the opening day of the Suffolk Show!

To summarise, I just wanted to say a BIG thank you for such a fantastic service, which I for one totally appreciate and I really just wanted you to know that!  I think it is such a great idea!
