Covid-19 Ophthalmology Support Service and eCare Virtual Consult
Evolutio Care Innovations, a leading NHS ophthalmology and MedTech service provider, have today released details of their support package made available to all NHS hospitals and CCGs to support the safe re-direction and transfer of eye care patients away from hospitals currently fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.
With the Royal College of Ophthalmologists recommending that hospital eye departments reduce their clinical activity by 80-90%, Evolutio have mobilised their eCare clinical division to develop clinical protocols and operating procedures to introduce a new virtual ophthalmology pathway that can undertake secure virtual consultations within their NHS approved cloud based medical record system, allowing for risk assessment and management of a significant cohort of patients from the safety of their own homes.
Evolutio’s MedTech software team have developed a fully IG compliant Virtual Consult platform that allows clinicians to perform video and telephone based consultations with patients requiring eye care. Volume is elastic, with current capacity running to a possible 5000 virtual appointments per day through utilisation of Evolutio’s UK clinician network.
Where outcomes of a virtual consultation conclude that there is a significant risk to sight, the patient can be booked immediately into one of Evolutio’s eCare Clinics by the central NHS Patient Services Team for a face to face appointment, or booked into Eye casualty, or outpatients at a suitable time in the future, through ERS/NHS mail, where safe and appropriate to do so.
Evolutio also provide an ophthalmology tele-triage service, already in operation across 10 CCGs, allowing patients to speak and be triaged by an eCare clinician and directed to the most appropriate pathway without requiring an initial visit to a physical premise, including eye casualty. With many hospitals now looking to close eye casualty, the eCare Tele-triage solution, in conjunction with the eCare Virtual Consult platform, is an off the shelf solution to manage a hospital’s eye care provision.
Queens Hospital, Romford was the first healthcare organisation to implement the new service, working closely with Evolutio in the movement and management of large numbers of eye care patients away from the hospital and into the community.
